De Castrique was born in Hendersonville. He went straight from the hospital to the funeral home where his father was the funeral director and the family lived upstairs. The unusual setting sparked his popular Barry Clayton series and launched his mystery writing career.
De Castrique set six of his novels in the fictional N.C. mountain town of Gainesboro. Four are set in Asheville, and one in Washington D.C. He also wrote a science thriller set in the year 2030, a two-act play entitled “A Dying Business,” and two mysteries written for young adults and set in the Charlotte region.
De Castrique is an entertaining read as well as speaker. His Sam Blackman Series includes “Blackman’s Coffin,” “The Fitzgerald Ruse,” “The Sandburg Connection” and “A Murder in Passing.” A fifth title in the series, “A Specter of Justice,” will be released in November. The Barry Clayton Series includes “Dangerous Undertaking,” “Grave Undertaking,” “Foolish Undertaking,” “Final Undertaking,” “Fatal Undertaking” and “Risky Undertaking.”
