Surrounded by the world’s constant clamor for time and attention, poet Tracey Schmidt and her musical collaborators offer a peaceful respite with “A Night of Poetry and Remembrance: Quiet Amidst the Story” on Sunday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m. at White Horse Black Mountain. Tickets are $12 advance/$15 door.

Schmidt will perform from memory poetry by Rumi, Hafiz, Yeats and Mary Oliver, as well as her own work. The verse will be accompanied by special musical guests cellist Isabel Castellvi and hand percussionist Nagmeh Farahmand. 

Schmidt is an award-winning poet and performer whose work has been published in numerous journals and anthologies. She has performed poetry around the country and at TEDx presentations. She currently teaches creativity, poetry, and photography in such facilities as the NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Julia Cameron’s Creativity Camp, John C. Campbell Folk School and in Asheville, her hometown. She’s facilitated poetry writing around the country in schools, prisons, and with those on a healing journey.

Schmidt's book of poetry, "I Have Fallen in Love with the World," was published in 2011. With the members of Free Planet Radio, she’s recorded a CD that includes many of the works she ‘ll be performing.

Cellist Isabel Castellvi is fluent in numerous styles. She’s performed, recorded and taught throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. After many years living in New York City, she now makes Asheville her home.

Percussionist Nagmheh Farahmand is a resident of Canda who has returned to Asheville this summer as a master teacher at the Asheville Percussion Festival. She’s the daughter of master percussionist Mahmoud Farahmand, and has performed with well-known ensembles worldwide. She includes dumbek, daf and many other international hand drums in her repertoire.
