Black Mountain gig lets tango dancers get hip to hip

From staff reports

Tango dancers, delight! The Asheville Tango Orchestra now has a steady gig at White Horse Black Mountain.

The Asheville Tango Orchestra has provided authentic live tango music for dancers and aficionados, performing classic Argentine dance sets and original cortinas arranged by Michael Luchtan.

On May 6, it begins a new series of monthly appearances at the Black Mountain music hall. On the second Wednesday of each month, tango enthusiasts can take to the dance floor for some riveting music.

The ATO's lineup, inspired by the classic tango Sextet Tipico, has included many fine players over the years. But the current incarnation features Gina Caldwell and Lew Gelfond on violins, Ryan Kijanka on bass, Micheal Jefry Stevens on piano, Franklin Keel on cello, vocalist Michael Luchtan and Patrick Kukucka on bandoneon, the iconic tango concertina.

The ATO recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign to maintain the momentum of the group, including ensuring a stable rehearsal space, recording a demo and obtaining new arrangements.
