The Montreat Film Festival will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, April 27 in Gaither Hall.

Montreat College will host the fifth annual Montreat College Film Festival at 7 p.m. Friday, April 27, in Graham Chapel in Gaither Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

“Montreat College is proud of its Western Carolina setting and wants to build bridges between neighborhoods and celebrate filmmakers whose art showcases the dynamic cinematic energy of our local communities,” said Montreat College communication professor Joseph Martin. “This event gives aspiring filmmakers the opportunity to put their talents on display in a competitive showcase.”

The college is currently accepting film submissions from local filmmakers. The deadline for submissions is Monday, April 23. This year’s theme “Fresh” was selected for its broad interpretive latitude and is suggestive of everything from nature to trends to new beginnings.

Up to 10 films will be chosen for screening. A panel of judges will select first, second, and third place winners, with a cash prize of $100 going to the winner. Submissions can be sent in mp4 format to montreatfilmfestival18@gmail.com.

Here are the submission guidelines:

  • Films must be 3-15 minutes in length.
  • Drama and comedy are equally welcome.
  • Special value will be place on "the ultimate spiritual truths."
  • Gratuitous violence, nudity, and obscenity should be avoided.
