UNCA presents free music events this month

Students and faculty in UNC Asheville’s Department of Music will present a full schedule of public events on campus this month, including performances in many different genres, lectures, master classes, and workshops, and a residency by visiting saxophonist Tim Green that is open to listeners and musicians in the community.

Thursday, Oct. 12: Live at Lunch Concert by the Bluegrass Ensemble. Noon-1 p.m. at the Highsmith Union Grotto, free.

Sunday, Oct. 15: Concert by the UNC Asheville Wind Ensemble, directed by Fletcher Peacock, UNC Asheville director of instrumental studies. This large ensemble, with more than 40 musicians, will perform music of Samuel Barber, Frank Ticheli, Tim Waters, Jay Ungar and Robert Jager. 3 p.m. at Lipinsky Hall, free.

Thursday, Oct. 19: Live at Lunch Concert with performances by the Contemporary Guitar Ensemble and the Booker T and the MGs Ensemble. Noon-1 p.m. at the Highsmith Union Grotto, free.

Friday, Oct. 20: Master Class and Clinic with the Huntertones. 12:45-1:45 p.m. Lipinsky Hall Room 018, free.

Andy Jurik, UNCA adjunct lecturer in music, will focus on the career and repertoire of Frederic Hand, Ralph Towner and Ken Hatfield.

Tuesday, Oct. 24: The Guitar’s Role in the Classical/Jazz Hybrid of Third Stream Music – Lecture by Andy Jurik, UNC Asheville adjunct lecturer in music. Jurik will focus on the career and repertoire of Frederic Hand, Ralph Towner and Ken Hatfield. 7 p.m. in Lipinsky Hall Room 018, free.

Wednesday, Oct. 25: Residency with Jazz Saxophonist Tim Green – 10-11:45 a.m. Master Class and Clinic; 2-3:15 p.m. Lipinsky Hall, free.

Thursday, Oct. 26: Tim Green Residency continues – 9:55-11:35 a.m. Advanced Harmony and Improvisation Class. 6-8 p.m. Open Rehearsal with the Cannonball Adderley Ensemble. Lipinsky Hall, free.

Thursday, Oct. 26: Live at Lunch Concert with performances by the Cannonball Adderley Ensemble and the X-tet. Noon-1 p.m. at the Highsmith Union Grotto, free.

The Tim Green Ensemble performs newly rehearsed music Oct. 27.

Friday, Oct. 27: Tim Green Residency continues – 12:45-1:45 p.m. Jazz Forum – Rehearsing a Song from Scratch. 2-3 p.m. Applied Hour – The Tim Green Ensemble performs newly rehearsed music. Lipinsky Hall Room 018, free.

Sunday, Oct. 29: Sing Loud! – Choral Concert featuring performances by the University Singers and the Asheville Singers. 3 p.m. in Lipinsky Hall, free.
