‘Cinema on the Square’ curtains are going up
Cinema on the Square, the Swannanoa community's new outdoor movie series at Grovemont Square next to the Swannanoa Library happens a sundown on Friday April 21 and May 19.
These family-friendly events are free and open to the public. The community helped choose the movies via an online survey. Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” will be shown on April 21, followed by a classic family favorite, “E.T. The Extra Terrestrial,” on May 19.
Bring a chair or blanket and arrive around 7 p.m. to enjoy the pre-movie festivities, including games, face painting, hula hooping and, on April 21, a special Earth Day celebration.
Grovemont Square is a perfect location for family events, with beautiful mountain views, an adjacent playground, and a large grassy area for playing games and hanging out. Pizza, popcorn, and baked goods will be available for purchase before and during the shows.
The Cinema on the Square movie series is put on by Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS), the Friends of the Swannanoa Library and the Swannanoa Community Council. It is supported by event sponsors Creative Village Child Care, Hare Brand Ideas, Native Kitchen, Okie Dokies Smokehouse, Papa John’s Pizza - Swannanoa, Penland’s Furniture, Symmetry Financial Group and Verner Center for Early Learning.
