‘Now & Then’ portrays passage of time

The Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League invites viewers to consider the precious and fleeting nature of time through its latest exhibition, “Now and Then.”

The exhibit, sponsored by the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League, will run Friday, May 6 through May 30 at the Red House Studio and Gallery, 310 W. State St., Black Mountain, beside the Monte Vista Hotel. An opening reception in the gallery will be 5-7 p.m. May 6.

Through realism, impressionism and abstractionism, the artists will show how people, places and things are affected by the passage of time. Artists will also be showing how they have evolved in their own creative journey.

All mediums will be represented in the exhibit, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, collage, fabric, encaustic, photography and 3-D sculpture

Marianne Larsen Reninger’s submission, “Auditory Bliss Interruptus,” explores the “then-and-now” concept in the context of the sounds made in a tropical environment.

“The dynamic format creates a visual division and assists the viewer as he dissects the primitive from the occupied. But which is which?” asks the event’s press release.

The show is curated by artist Meryl Meyer, who specializes in acrylic and pastel.

A league member and a member of the Appalachian Pastel Society, she has been juried into international, national, statewide and local shows.

“I am excited about the possible creative interpretations in this show by our talented artists,” she said.
