Blacklist Improv brings night of film, skits

From staff reports

Short attention span? Love to laugh? Join Blacklist Improv Comedy on May 27 for an evening of adult comedy in short films, improv skits and sketch comedy.

Blacklist Improv Comedy will premier of three new comedy films and screen “Online U,” a 2015 Austin Comedy Short Film Festival selection; “High Regard,” a 2014 Austin Revolution Film Festival selection; and “Love What You Do,” a 2014 SunPants Film Festival.

All films were produced by Toni Sherwood and Jim Hilderbrandt with local cast and crew.

During the evening, there will also be sketch comedy staring local actors Allen Law, Kristen Aldrich, James Allen, Paula Orr and Rigel Pawlak.

Blacklist Improv Comedy formed out of John Granatino’s meetup group, Impromptu Improv.

Granatino and James Allen studied at Second City in Chicago and are group members with Allen Law, Amanda Lytz, Marlene Thompson, Ben Matcher and Ben Kohan.

Two of the new films to premier and one of the sketches were developed in a writing workshop facilitated by Granatino and Sherwood. Hilderbrandt, co-producer of the films, wrote one of the sketches.

Last fall Sherwood, who has an MFA in film from Columbia College Chicago, showed the sketches to Black Mountain resident Kevin Patrick Murphy.

He liked them enough to arrange a reading of the scripts at The Actor’s Center of Asheville. Sherwood cast most of the parts from Murphy’s students, who are working actors.

“3 Women,” shot at White Horse Black Mountain, is about three girlfriends reuniting for a nostalgic night on the town.

“Get Real Dating” is about a dating service that helps singles express their authentic selves.

“Sex Camp” is about a local company that starts a “fun and informative” summer camp, Sherwood said.
