The Land of the Sky Symphonic Band has already established itself as a Fourth of July tradition at the White Horse Black Mountain with rousing Independence Day music.

But the band is equal to any holiday occasion, so they’re preparing to deliver a concert filled with musical goosebump moments beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Halloween night, Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Land of the Sky Band will have a wealth of material to choose from. For centuries composers have written music evoking the eerie, uncanny and supernatural. Think of the “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” segment of Disney’s Fantasia centered around Paul Dukas’ tone poem, or the harrowing animation of Modest Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” in the same movie.

One has only to hear the opening of Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in d minor” to recall The Phantom of the Opera, and Grieg’s trollish “In the Hall of the Mountain Kings” is almost a cliche of creepiness.

And what would your favorite horror movie be without the sound track?

Founded in 1990 as a way of reuniting Enka High School alumni with their band director, it soon became apparent that the high level of interest meant that the Land of Sky Symphonic Band would become a community band. Through many changes of membership and directors a core group persevered, raising standards by remaining small and choosing members by invitation or audition.

Today, the Land of the Sky Symphonic Band is a 43-piece auditioned ensemble made up of skilled amateur and professional musicians.

Current musical director Dr. David Wilken is a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University with a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from DePaul University and the Doctor of Arts in Trombone Performance from Ball State University.

He’s held teaching positions at several colleges and universities, and is currently an Instructor of Music at Western Carolina University as well as Music Director and lead trombonist of the Asheville Jazz Orchestra.
