A doula is defined as a person “who is trained to assist a woman during childbirth and who may provide support to the family after the baby is born."

Greg Lathrop is a doula specializing in caring for those at the other end of life’s journey, a doula for the dying. He’s also a fine musician, and in that capacity he’ll be the featured guest at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15 for host Jay Brown's “Local Live” at the White Horse Black Mountain.

Brown, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, has collaborated with with Lathrop in creating musical experiences around grief.

“Greg is the first Death Doula teacher in the Eastern U.S., and was a Hospice Nurse for a number of years”, says Brown. “He is also an accomplished songwriter and pianist, and will be doing some original songs with me. He sings in a warm baritone voice songs of depth and spiritual searching."

In addition, to collaborating the Brown, Lathrop also performs with Scott Sheerin, an accomplished flutist who makes his home near Weaverville, in an improvisational group called A Tale of 2 Flutes.
