Jazz ensemble shares its 'core values'

Staff reports

The Core, one of the many projects of the multi-talented jazz pianist/composer Bill Bares, returns to the White Horse Black Mountain on Wednesday, Jan. 25 for a concert of Asheville all-star jazz.

During its Jan. 25 performance at White Horse, The Core will be performing (and working out) music it will soon record.

The Core reunites the original members of Hard Bop Explosion (Bares on piano, Justin Ray on trumpet, Jacob Rodriguez on sax, bassist Zack Page and drummer Evan Martin) and reboots the band as a modern jazz group playing all-original music in a format that allows for more risk-taking, chemistry and spontaneous interaction.

At the White Horse they’ll be stage testing soon-to-be-recorded compositions as they define and refine the group’s musical aesthetic.
