The Owen Warhorses surged to a 5-0 start with their 73-72 win at home over Reynolds Dec. 6. That's the best start head coach Chuck Robinson has had in his seven years on the sidelines.

Late-game heroics by senior center Mathew Brown cemented the comeback win for the Warhorses over Reynolds, a team they have defeated twice this season.

The Warhorses came out of the gate strong, holding Reynolds to 13 points in the first quarter. The Rockets, however, outscored Owen by 8 in the second quarter and took a 37-33 lead into the half. The Warhorses wouldn’t lead again until a pair of Ben Craig free throws put them ahead 70-69 in the final minutes.

A Rockets three-pointer was followed by a pair of free throws by Owen senior Brian Bartlett. The 72-71 Reynolds lead set the stage for Brown, whose lay-up from the baseline put the Warhorses ahead.

His bucket with 14.4 seconds on the clock gave the Rockets a chance for a game-winning shot. The ensuing Reynolds possession saw the Rockets’ guard drive by his defender into a collapsing defense, He passed to a teammate cutting to the rim, but Brown, whose lengthy 6-foot-5 frame is a consistent disruption at the rim, blocked the attempt to secure the win for the Warhorses.

Owen students ran onto the court to celebrate the win with the team.

On Dec. 9, the Warhorses ... (summary of Avery game on 12/9).
